About us

Our history dates back to1994 when the Department of English in Rostov State University was split into two independent departments – the Department of English for Sciences and the Department of English for Humanities.  In 2006 four institutions of higher education (Rostov State University, Rostov State Academy of Architecture and Arts, Rostov State Pedagogical University and Taganrog State Radio Engineering University) were united into Southern Federal University. Since that time our official name has been the Department of English for Sciences of the Institute of Philology, Journalism & Crosscultural Communication of the Southern Federal University(SFedU). From 1994 to 2024 the Department of English for Sciences was headed by Doctor of Pedagogy, Professor Olga I. Safronenko.

Since May 2024 the Department of English for Sciences has been headed by Candidate of Science in Philology, Associate Professor Anna A. Andrienko.

Our primary attention is focused on EAP and ESP teaching to undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students in sciences as well as developing ESP tailored courses which take into consideration professional competences in different specialisms.

The academic staff in the Department is also engaged in local and large-scale, collaborative research projects. We place great emphasis on exchanging research ideas and host a variety of ELT methodology seminars and conferences often in collaboration with other departments in Southern Federal University or outside institutions.
